Where do toothbrushes come from and how are they made?

The entire toothbrush production process, from initial design to packaging, takes place in the Shenzhen. In the past, the Shenzhen factory started to manufacture electronic products and export to the world. These factories have very inexpensive products, yet there are many high quality and thus make Shenzhen's electronic products famous all over the world. Over time, this industry formed an industrial cluster, and later specialized in manufacturing various electronic products and related accessories, such as electric toothbrushes, electronic cigarettes, and digital products such as mobile phones and computers.. Thus, these factory perfected their techniques and have developed important patents to this day.
All phases of production are carried out in one place. Moving to other locations may have made it cheaper, but short transport distances are more environmentally friendly.
Obviously, during production all legal requirements in force in European Union are met. Relish manufacturer has the ISO 9001: 2015 and ISO 13485: 2016 certifications. In addition, the production is carried out with solar energy and for the cooling of the machinery a separate water circuit is used.

Manufacturing process of toothbrush


Step 1: Injection

The term "injection" refers to the manufacturing technique of the plastic handle provided with holes for the bristles. For the replaceable brush head, the handle and base of the head are manufactured with holes. This process consists of heating the granulated plastic and injecting it under high pressure in a liquid state into a metal mold. Once cool, the mold is opened and a robotic arm extracts the handles, which are transferred to the bristle assembly machine. In toothbrushes with two or more components (such as the Relish replaceable head toothbrush) the harder plastic (a polypropylene / PP) is injected first and then the soft plastic (thermoplastic elastomer / TPE), which partially covers hard plastic.
 

Step 2: Assembling the bristles

The bristle tufts are "stuffed" into the holes in a special computer-controlled machine. A metallic anchor wire holds the bristles in the hole. Depending on the degree of hardness of the toothbrushes, colored bristles of different diameters are used. The tufts are cut at different heights depending on the distribution of the bristles. The Relish Replaceable Head Toothbrush setting is high-low, with an interdental cut that allows better access to the spaces between the teeth. In each batch of product, the traction force of each filament (bristles) and the tuft of bristles is measured. They must withstand a minimum pulling force of 15 Newton to ensure that they will not loosen during tooth brushing.
 

Step 3: Rounding the ends of the bristles

Once cut to length, the ends of the bristles have sharp edges that damage enamel and gums. For that reason, they are ground down on rotary grinders to an optimal rounded finish. A good rounded finish is an important sign of the quality of a toothbrush. Relish toothbrushes are manufactured on modern high-tech machines. The quality of the rounded finish of each batch of product is checked under a microscope and recorded.
 

Step 4: Packaging

The finished toothbrush is packed in a blister pack. For this Relish uses a thermoformed bio-PET cover. The toothbrush is inserted into the blister and then sealed with a cardboard foil. After a final quality check, the toothbrushes are packed by hand and prepared for shipment.

The bio-PET film used in packaging is more environmentally friendly than conventional PET, but we are working on greener packaging solutions. A change of this type requires several months, so at the beginning of 2020 we plan to implement first the replacement head packets entirely made of cardboard and in a second phase we will do the same with the toothbrush packaging.
